Coming back from Banbury and Chipping Norton late last night was fun: damp hilly roads, full beam lighting, torquey engine, no brake balance issues on downhill hard braking (worst case), so pleased so far with the big rear brakes. I'll get the Mot over with, and also the SJ MoT before I start looking at a bracket for the Golf calipers. I do like the appearance of the Golf calipers on the car when mocked up yesterday, looking forward to an improved handbrake as well

Pads/new discs bedding in nicely now. Can't tell any difference in braking performance at all Can't work out how those people say there is a difference Fortunately, I'm doing it because I want a good handbrake action 'cos I park on a sloping drive for one thing, also the Golf unit has a good reputation and is more direct acting/mechanically efficient than the R 800 unit.

Got the TF MoT out of the way today, so when the decorating has subsided I can press on with the addition of the Golf calipers ;D

Well done on the MOT But was there ever any doubt given that you know every inch of your car intimately ;D

Back brakes coming good now after a bit of mileage and chucking out a load of pad dust Next step is the biggie of fitting the Golf calipers now I know it's worth the change.

Back brakes now working well after a few more miles. The discs have a clean sweep and fully bedded into the old pads.
They came into their own yesterday on some long downhill bendy bits - all in all, worth doing so far.

Just had a eureka moment - a real brake though Just got to find some 0.25" plate and cut out by hand the hard way a couple of adaptor plates together with some machined spacers and source some high tensile nuts and bolts. Got enough to make a start, although I won't be in a position to fit anything until we get back from Ireland as everything works fine on the OEM rear calipers at the moment with the 280mm discs. I might get a spare set of rear discs so I can make a dummy set-up whilst keeping the TF on the road, as I need to tailor make the brackets to a very precise fit.

sounds very intriguing Jerry Not really, just thought of a way to fabricate the brackets myself. I've done enough brake work in my life to think I know what I'm doing (rear SJ disc conversion, making my own Goodrich hoses etc) , as safety and mechanical integrety is foremost. If/when I can make the brackets, I'll be ready to make a move. I've converted a spare set of handbrake cables already, the only problem is I don't know how well they will fit, or even if they will be long enough. In theory, it should be do-able and a little light is visible at the end of the tunnel.
