The first MGF's were from Q1 1995 with 000000 - 000098 as press cars, race cars and crash test cars, 000251 - 000999 were built between Q3 and Q4 1995. MGF Mk1's finished circa Q3 in late 1999 (don't know exactly when as it's not recorded) but it is at vin number 511058. This is known as model year code A.
Model year Code B commences from 511059 Q3 1999, in between this there are MK2 pre-production cars between 504022 and 510902 and two rogue cars 549294 and 593792.
The first MK1, as I'm sure you know is 000251, (the Abingdon factory phone number) the last 511058.
The first MK2 511059, the last 535576 built in Q4 2001.
The 70,000th car is SARRDZBPC1D528331 HV51KPP a Trophy, the 80,000th car is SARRDWBKN2D602888 which is in Germany therefore , you can see the production run of F's finished in 2001 between these numbers as the 1 or 2 denote year of manufacture, that is why all Trophy's have a 1 or 2 in it's vin.
The first TF was 533434 an 02 pre-production car with the last pre-production car being 535586. The first production cars being 000101-000154 from Q4 2001 then they produced 600155 from Q1 2002 through to 641764 Q2 2005 but reg'd 30/06/2006 in Germany. I don't know if the "000" batch cars are on the road as they may have been crash test cars.
The last car off the line was SARRDMEB5D641671 completed at 10.22am on 7th April 2005, it appeared at MGF10 in October 2005. A further 93 were completed as these were the cars ring fenced by PWC after the collapse of MGR. They commenced completion of these from 9th May 2005, we first found out about them while on the SMGM meeting in Sweden July 2005 when I saw a vin number higher than the "last", I believe all of these 93 cars were exported.
Therefore 641764 was the 118,847th MGF/TF produced at Longbridge with the later 93 completed outside.
000251 was first registered 06/08/1995, the 50,000th SARRDWBTCXD508290, T597KJX was registered on 30/03/1999, the 100,000th SARRDMBEB4D622888, PY53KXK was registered on 12/08/2003 to give you an idea of the dates.
There are actually four types of MGF believe it or not, the MK1, the MK2, the TF MY02 and the TF MY05 (they had pre-production MY05's as the designs changes needed a new certification ! The last TF MY02 was 639633 from Q4 2004, the first TF MY05 was 637929.
The quickest way to tell a different model is this :
MK1......Black windscreen surround, manual mirror controls, cream dials, no rear speakers, switches arranged on different levels.
Mk2.......Colour coordinated windscreen surround, electric mirros, silver dials, rear T bar speakers, one level switches.
TF MY02.....Plastic rear window, registration before 05 (however these can be easily changed).
TF MY05..... Glass rear window.
MGF 1.6's are hard to identify and quite rare, always 2001 models I believe.
MGTF 1.6's have black mesh in the side vents and black door handles (makes it a tad difficult if the car is pearl black though).
120's and 135's, tachometer red lines at 6750.
vvc's (143) & 160's, red line at 7250 with vvc marked on the inlet plenum chamber (160's have the letter P on the vin, I believe 135's show K, vvc's show T and 120's (mpi's) have G.
Therefore the vin sequence, using the Trophy as an example :
S denotes the geographic area
A country
R manufacturer
RD marque/model
Z body/trim level *
B body style (2 door convertible) **
P engine type
C steering/transmission ***
1 model change
D assembly plant ****
6 figures serial number
* (easy way to identify Trophy's as they are the only cars to carry Z).
** all cars will carry B
*** non Trophy's are B for RHD manual and J for RHD CVT
**** all cars will carry D if assembled at Longbridge
Paint codes and trim codes explanation:
First letter, basic colour
Second letter, mark/identifier
Third letter, colour/shade name
