I have been off the road for 6 weeks after having a major op. Now I can drive again, I plan a day out driving around the Brecon Beacons stopping at the Castle hotel in Talgarth for the night. Would like route suggestions from Monmouth ending at Talgarth about 3 hours later.

Hi Roger
Good to hear you are recovering well. As your start and end are to the east of the Beacons you might have to do a bit of big road driving to keep around 3 hours. I was thinking something like Skenfrith, Abergavenny, Penderyn (A465 unfortunately), Libanus (over Beacons), Garth (via Upper/Lower Chapel over Epynt), Newbridge on Wye, Builth (A470), Talgarth. Alternative could be to get to Merthyr, go Storey Arms, towards Libanus, turn off for Sennybridge, double back via Crai to Abercraf, Penderyn, back over the Beacons towards Libanus (bit of double covering into Libanus), then onto Brecon and Talgarth. I think the Upper/Lower Chapel to Garth road is great with a fantastic view point at the top before dropping down towards Garth. At Garth you could head west towards Tirabad and do the Epynt range backwards to how we did it in April. Lots of options and lots of good roads.
Have a great time driving those roads .. take some photos for us and let us know which route you take.
Phil

Did my run on Weds. & was blessed with great weather. Tried to keep to B & unclassified roads & was well rewarded with some good driving roads coupled with lovely scenery. The highlight was the run from Glentawe to Trecastle & then via Llandulais to Garth on Unclssified roads passing MOD property. Onto Builth, then Brecon via Upper & Lower Chapel & finally Talgarth for a pint, fish & chips & a bed for the night. What a day!
