After the run last Sunday the mg had drank a bit of water so I have been using my work van all week. I had time to look at it today and when undoing the pressure cap it fell apart so I thought that was that then I thought I will just drain the oil to be sure and out came half a mug of water first. So 38k and H.G.F has struck. Louise says it was the way I drove up the hill section of the run that did it but I think at 38k its just time. Funny thing is I've been saying for the last couple of weeks maybe I should get it done before it goes.

Not confident enough to do it myself I've never done a head gasket an over head cam so it will be a garage job unfortunately.
Strangely I'm sort of glad to get it out of the way the closer it's been getting to 40k the more uts been in the back of my mind although I would not have let it stop us going anywhere that's what the AA are for.
We've been talking about going for along drive possibly Cornwall or the south of France so better close to home than hundreds of miles away.

Getting a price from the local lad. He has said that he usually only fits the standard gasket but will fit the land rover one if I really want it so hopefully ken will appear on here with some advice as I can't remember what he told me about them the other week.

Shame about the HG Oz, but as you say, better to go while you're closer to home if you've long trips planned. My (limited) understanding of the gaskets is that unless the head is out of true, then a standard gasket is the one to fit. If there's any slight marking in the head (usually after over heating) then the MLS gasket is a better choice as it's very slightly more forgiving being multi layered. One of my HG repairs (the one done at a garage in Barry) used the MLS gasket the wrong way up which is why it never sealed correctly and lost a small amount of coolant regularly until it was later replaced correctly. Nice number plate idea John, I like that a lot

Sorry Oz I haven't been on and Ken never comes on! He said if the clearance is 0.003inches or more between the top of the liner and the top of the block use the multi layer gasket if not use old style gasket but make sure it is a proper Rover one, and a replace head bolts with a good set. If you need any more help give us a call
