Hi all,
I just joined the forum. I own a 2000 MGF with Steptronic gearbox. I have an ongoing overheating problem. Can someone come and chat to me about this if you have some time and I'll tell you the story. Maybe you can point me in the right direction.

Hi Simon and welcome Have you checked the usual ie:
1. loss of coolant, check the bottom corners of the rad (common place to leak) check the under floor rad pipes and water pump for leaks.
2. Sticky thermostat (a pain to take out and check but drop it in boiling water and it should open)
3.white oil bit like mayonnaise or bubbling in the rad header tank( this is not good, head gasket failed)
There are people on here that know a lot more than me hopefully they will log on and give you more to go on.

Thanks OZ. I've checked these things. I've put a new rad, thermostat and water pump on recently but I did notice a bit of emulsion on the dipstick which isn't a good sign. But there's no water coming out of the top bleed nipple when the engine is running which I guess indicates a blockage somewhere. I'll double check the rad pipes under the car. Cheers

I changed the coolant in mine recently and suffered overheating simply because the system hadn't been bled properly from the 3 points, buggers to get air in the system due to engine position.
Hope it's something simple

I did notice a bit of emulsion on the dipstick Don't panic too much about a small amount on the dipstick as long as the main body of oil is ok. The small tube you feed the dipstick down does attract condensation especially if you are only doing short run's. Aa rainbowtf says sound's like you have an airlock in the cooling system

So any ideas how to get the air lock out? I've tried bleeding it facing up hill, downhill, on the flat, draining it, refilling it........ I can get the two front ones to bleed but not the one on the engine.

Hi Simon
Welcome to the forum.
The guys have covered a lot of the normal bases and you've already replaced most of the usual suspects.
If nothing comes out of the bleed nipple with the engine running then it seems that there's no flow/pressure in the water flow, or the bleed nipple is blocked. If the pump isn't working you won't get water flow, but you have a new pump. Do the rubber pipes at the radiator get hot?
What about the under floor steel pipes rusting and rust flakes blocking the pipes and/or hoses and radiator? Do any hoses stay cold?
Maybe drastic action is required - remove all water hoses and flush the block and all pipes?
Hope you find the problem without too much hassle.
