As far as I know, the only oil that should be used in the VVC engine is Castrol Magnatec 10-40 Semi Synthetic.

As John said above, Castrol GTX Magnatec is the leader of the 'tried & trusted' table of oils, and there'll be little benefit in putting anything more exotic with a 'more expensive so it must be better' pricetag in instead - possibly the complete opposite.
Any 10w/40 oil currently available meets the minimum required spec for the engine, and much of the brand marketing is simply to persuade you that their particular oil will last longer before it needs changing. All well and good if the service intervals are entirely at your own discretion, but largely pointless if you follow the manufacturer's prescribed intervals. Which you should do, obviously...
Whatever oil you put in, do let it get up to working temperature before asking too much of the engine and there's every chance you'll still be getting the same grin factor when the mileage is well into six figures.

So castrol Magnetek 10/40 semi is the best option then?

I currently use an X-Power brand semi synthetic 10/40 for my VVC F. I think it's down to personal choice and what you're prepared to pay for a recognised brand. Agree with Mike's comments , I generally don't exceed 3000 rpm until oil is up to temperature.

So castrol Magnetek 10/40 semi is the best option then? I didn't say it was the 'best' option, but then I did say that maybe the best option (whatever that is) won't actually give you additional value for money. Any 10/40 semi synthetic should tick all the boxes, noting that Castrol Magnatec is probably the most tried and tested although other quality brands exist, such Silkolene, to name but one. Personally, I have Castrol in the garage...

Castrol for me too.
The VVC needs similar to cater for the VVC mech which reads oil temperature to cater for fluidity change in the hydraulics.
