Don't know why the cap exploded like yours did, but they are supposed to be changed on a regular basis as part of the service routine.

I can only think that at some time it might have been dropped, which resulted in either a hairline crack or stress fracture which gave way under pressure. As said above, they should be regularly replaced and I personally always carry a spare (along with radiator bleed screw and auxilliary drive belt).

I don't think it is in any schedule to change the cap regularly.
Unfortunately a lot of them were c**p, which makes people nervous.
The only answer is testing the cap off the car. Not many people can do this - I've got a little rig I made and my cap has been fine for years. I test it anually.
Swopping caps can mean jumping out of the frying pan etc. Which other car has to change the pressure regularly - none I think!!
My SJ one has worked well from 1985/86- Jap made.

hi there I concur with regular replacement . Also check occasionaly that the centre brass dot has not moved off centre Mike I've found that to be an old wive's tale. I've taken them apart, no reason to fail other than faulty/cra**y manufacture. Swopping on a regular basis is no guarantee - testing is the only sure way of reliable operation.

I just replaced mine as I could hear it spitting when I first brought it home, went out and changed it right away, if it wasn't for these forums I wouldn't have known :-)

Hi Steve iv'e seen that picture before i think i'm glad the cap went as its cheaper Mark thinks he had a bad skim job done the first time ? hope he's right dont want to fork out again we're assuming the loss of water overheated the system and the weakest point being the cap seems ok now fingers crossed.Merry Christmas Steve and all SWMGF members.

A Merry Christmas to all members ! It seems very quite on here for the last few months, so I assume eveyone's cars are running faultlessly ! The handbrake on mine is really c**p, so I'm going to get a pair of calipers fitted at the local garage ( I really could'nt to be bothered crawling round on my hands and knee's in this ( or any other) weather !
