My son's Lotus Elise, fitted with K series 1.8 engine, has started to loose coolant. It appears to loose it when it has being standing for about a week or more, but seems fine when the engine is running and under pressure !? No sign of HGF ( it was replaced 2 years ago). As he's now moved abroad, I need to get it fixed (as cheap as possible!), and get it sold. I'm pretty certain I've seen water around the o/s/r wheel area (water pump ?). Any advice greatly appreciated !

John - I can't offer any specific advice, other than all the usual checks one might make for an F/TF, but why not take a look on the SELOC Lotus forum here: forums.seloc.org/portal.phpI think you'll need to register to view the forums, but it's just a user id and email address that's required, and there is an absolute wealth of technical information in the Technical and Wiki sections. I joined many years ago purely for the K series technical information available.....

Just phoned the garage re the strange coolant loss on the Elise; they've found the cylinder block is cracked !! Any idea's on a quick fix (I'm thinking Radweld sort of things)? I certainly can't afford to replace the engine, so any idea's would be most appreciated. John

Almost unheard of these days. Not much help I'm afraid.

The engine has always had plenty of A/F, and has run faultlessly. I've found a product called Kalimex K Seal, which claims to seal cracked blocks. As I say, I need to get a quick fix and sell it ASAP.

Hi is it an S1 or S2 S1s are at a premium and an engine is not that much given the £££ you can get for an S1 Good luck with it

Cylinder heads and blocks can be repaired by stitching, but by the time the motor is taken out and stripped, it's probably cheaper to replace the engine. Try Kalimex, what have you got to loose, but spare a thought for the poor sod who'll be the next owner. lockstitchuk.co.uk/id110.htmlBest of luck with it. Cols

Rang the garage today, and they have already added Kalimex to the cooling system. They think, on closer inspection, that it may be a porous ( if thats how you spell it) spot on the engine block and not a crack, and they'll run the car for a couple of days to see how it goes. In the 4 years my son has owned this car, I was sure I could smell anti freeze when the engine was warm, so perhaps this is what was causing it. In regards to "the next poor sod " who might buy it, I fully appreciate what you are saying, but as long as the leak is cured ( excellent reviews on Kalimex), I'll feel OK in passing it on ( my son payed £14000 of his hard earned cash for this car, with an albeit unknown coolant leak). So it's fingers crossed until the garage get back to me!
