I'd appreciate any helpful comments on this one.
When I bought my TF about eight months ago with 59,000 miles on the clock, I was struck by how slightly stiff and notchy the gear change was. I thought at the time I would get used to it and so I have to some extent but it still catches me out at times.
I have to be fairly deliberate ( I don't know how else to describe it ) when changing gear generally, and sometimes when changing down from third to second, if I'm a bit casual, it will not go into second at the first attempt. Also at times it has the tendency not to select reverse fully and as I ease my foot off the clutch theres an embaressing sound of gears not having been engaged properly. Don't me wrong, this is not a big deal, it doesn't happen all the time, but I would like to know if this is typical, because, unlike mine, I would have expected a cable change to get a bit sloppy over time.

"They all do that sir" Well, to a greater or lesser extent. On the assumption that there are no hydraulic or clutch issues, then it might be worth removing the gear lever gaiter and checking the lever securings and mechanism. There are three bolts to check for tightness, one forward, one on the drivers side and one to the rear only accessible from the cubby box and through the ash tray. Whilst you've got the gaiter off, take the opportunity to lubricate the pivot points etc. Don't overtighten any of the fixings! On the other hand, could it be as simple as the clutch not fully disengaging and an issue with eg the slave cylinder or clutch release arm?

The PG1 box is really quick changing. We have one on the MG-R 25, and there is no problem at all with selection, speed of gear change, or selection of reverse. Try disconnecting the cables at the quadrant, and see how freely the gear lever waggles about. Check the action of the gear lever is central in the "hole" in the central console. The reverse selection is via a little ramp and a syncro cone which stops the cogs spinning, which is why the selection feels a little stiff. The usual tricks help to get a clean reverse engagement. It does help to check the oil level in the gear box. I guess some cars are still running around with minimal oil in due to dealers not doing the initial PDI and topping up the gear box oil. Only sufficient oil was introduced on the line to get the cars out of the factory and to the dealer

Thanks for info.
I retired last month so I'll have more time to play ( that what my wife calls it ) with the car now and I'll check out the things you've suggested. It's hard to believe that MG Rover would under fill the gearbox on the assembly line as a cost cutting measure. No wonder they went out of business. I did have a quick look under the car today at the Bell Crank Assembly. The rose joints seemed free enough although a bit rusty, but I did notice that the rubber gaiters on the cable ends had perished and looked more like a line of O rings. These are cheap enough to buy but how easy are they to replace? Do the cable rod ends unscrew? They look as if they might. For the time being I've just squirted everything in grease. Also Mike Satur sells an improved Bell Crank Assembly. Has anyone fitted this and if so, did it do what it says on the tin i.e improve the gear change?

The gaitors can be replaced, and if you do you can check the action of the gear change rod/ bell crank for freedom. The MS bell crank is a big improvement for the money, as the shift is shortened, but not as much as the full kit which does the same at the gear change end. Some people don't like the full kit as if not careful/sympathetic with the syncro cones it can feel obstructive. It's not really stiff, just a trade off with the reduced leverage of the throw of the gear lever with a quicker action. Simple physics really
