Ive just bought my first BRG R reg 1997 MGF yesterday and driven it 275miles home, and just been told it needs 3 new bulbs and a new track rod end to pass its MOT. im well happy because i only payed £400 for it. i was a bit worried cos it hadnt moved off the blokes drive for over 8 months, it just needs a little tlc and it will look great. any hints or tips from anyone would be great. thanks darren.

Hi Darren and welcome to . It's incredible that these cars can now be picked up for that sort of money; it sounds as if you've picked yourself up a bargain In addition to any work needed for the MOT and, of course, the TLC you mention, is there any service history with the car? The cam belt(s) must be changed every 60,000 or 5 years, and it makes sense to change the tensioner and water pump at the same time. If you're in any doubt about if/when this has been carried out, then make sure to get it done. A snapped cam belt will result in a costly engine repair Other than that, go and enjoy the car. For that sort of money you probably can't go wrong

Hiya and welcome to SWMGF, good advice from Mike, one thing springs to mind to check and this is the coolant pipes under car,if they are the standard black ones check for any sin of rusty corrosion and any signs of water leaks,if and when budget allows you can get stainless coolant pipes for around £70 and well worth replacing and of course the coolant ;D if you m me your name and address i can send yo a membership card whic you can benefit from 10% discount from MGF Centre and Xpart spares in Newport, have a look at that thread for more info, Dave
