My cars an mpi., I've had a K&N air filter for some while now, not the best I know but better than the original, bought it for the sound really.
A few months back popped in a 52mm ally throttle body, nice response.
Have just fitted a blue flame exhaust, twin oval pipes with a de-cat and created a third cold air feed for the K&N by entirely removing the old unused air box remnants, ran it from the N/S air vent.
The sound is amazing, not too noisy, as I wanted, warmed it up gently, as I do took it out for a blast, it 's like it's a different car.
A TF135 owner took over and ran it, declares it to be better than his, the claims are, with the mods an increase of 15 - 20 bhp, how true that is I don't know, but it sounds and feels so much better now, for a reasonably modest outlay, compared to engine head and cam work. Cost around £480 total.
If there is a down side, as opposed to a dark side, I can't hear the K&N any more, oh well c'est la vie ! ;D

Adrian,
I'm confused (didnt take a lot)...conflicting information..so looking to you who has one to ask..
Does the K&N filter give raspy sound or deep rumble (the sort that sets car alarms off ;D) or is there another way of getting that deep rumble (technical speak)
just so as i know what to ask Santa for!
Al

Do I hear the dark side creeping in Al?? I've got a K&N and it's the type of noise that puts a great big grin on your face!!!! Put it on the top of your 'Wish list' for Santa. You won't regret it...Honest

Shhhh - don't tell anyone - it is one of the few things i'd like to change; just the sound a little deeper - if i could get it sounding my otherhalf's FTO i'd be well chuffed. but don't want the raspy sound on tickover, just deep rumble.
From what i understand (as you can tell i'm not technically minded!) different filter/exhaust combinations give different results.
I can see i'm gonna spend Friday night in the car park!

The good thing about the K&N is it's selective. You can have the deep rumble if you want but if you're driving into your works car park and need to sound normal you can. I just love going past the little boy racers and seeing their faces as I drive past. I know, Middle aged woman and all that but hey "I Love it!!!"

If anybody on the 9th has a K&N and will take you for a spin, that is the best thing I can suggest, difficult to create the sound on a forum. You can just hear a whistle from it on tick over, like an air rush.
Drive it nicely, you don't even notice it, but put your foot down and it gives a deep gutsy roar until you lift your foot off.
A few extra bhp, provided you keep the air going to it cold, it sucks up fron underneath.
Start talking about exhausts and we could be here all night so, in a nutshell :
All current after market exhausts are s/steel, guaranteed for life, they all produce a few bhp extra, although some claim more. I can only suggest you go for cost, although they are all similar (£270 - £300) and the look of the tail pipes eg oval, round or quads.
Expect between 8 - 12 bhp extra with this combination, maybe a few more with the 52mm throttle body.
This is because the air flow to the engine is increased and the exhaust gas is better flowing with less restriction.
If nobody else has such a combination you can take mine for a spin on the 30th.
Hope this helps.

Al as Adrian and Sal says, a K&N 57i is a terrific little mod and pretty easy to fit, it is as both say,the noise is there if you want it, no rasp as such more of a deep roar with your standard exhaust, a K&N will last 100k and only need to clean cone once or twice during that time, and if ever you get fed up or roar you will have no probs in selling on, they only cost around £80 or so and one of the best mods penny for penny worth getting, i won't be in F on Fri as mine laid up awaiting new Discs and brakes to be fitted, so coming with Brians Wife kay which means no TF of Brians either, but do hope you get to hear one, i had K&N 57i induction kit for over a year and sold for £40 and i had it second hand also ha ha, now i upgraded to huge Taipan enclosed filter which cost almost 3 times as much and is great performace wise and a beauty to look at but you can't see it unless open boot ha ha but boy do i miss that roar, but you will notice difference bhp wise, which will be about 10bhp extra, Dave www.filterpower.co.uk/index.htm

Tossed a coin with Mike over the 'phone today to decide who would be driving over on Friday night - i.e. which lucky person can imbibe the booze. Yeh - Mike won. I'm sure he cheated or something!!! Anyway - I will be driving over. I've got the K&N fitted so If anyone wants to hear its dulcet tones I will gladly take them for spin. Bit disappointed I haven't got the blinging Trev Taylor exhaust yet, would have been nice to have let you all have a listen to that beast! Watch this space.....coming soon! Fiona
