Hey all, Got my Tahiti Blue TF160 back in September but for some unknown reason only now joining! Haven't had the smoothest of rides since I had it with a few niggly things here and there but then again I didn't expect it to be. Have an oil leak at the moment, apparently coming from in and around the cam (I'm useless once that engine cover is off but had someone briefly look at it), apart from the mobile mechanics mentioned in mg forums is there anyone more local that knows their way around these as I'm unsure if a mobile mech doing a 400 mile round trip is the way forward for an oil leak? Anyway mainly a quick hello to you all and hopefully see some of you around soon enough. Thanks Nik Attachments:

Hi Nik and welcome Niggly things are all part of being an MG owner... I've had/got a fair few of my own niggles and still have many of them! I know of a good ex MGR mechanic who is very reasonable and reliable, but he's up near me in Pontypool so maybe a bit far from you? If the 2 mobiles you mention are either Russell Walsh or Jon Norris (Rough Luck Racing), they both come highly recommeded and have both worked on my car at some point in the past

Thanks Chris, I will certainly bare Barry in mind as it's one of the closest recommendations I've been told about so far, appreciate it.
Hey Jan, again Pontypool is one of the closest recommendations I've had so will definitely be kept in mind. Yeh I've heard of Russ and Jon and also Dave-Kayleigh, I think me going somewhere local-ish would be the better option as my understanding of where the leaks coming from is brief, so getting a mobile mech to come down could end up beig more costly than I bargained for if the problem turns out to be bigger. I suppose At least in a garage they can give it a look over first.
Thanks for the replies all!!

I've heard both good and bad things about Dave & Kayleigh, but have never used them myself so can't comment on their work.
Russell came to replace a suspected head gasket for me a few years ago, but turned out there was nothing wrong with it so to save 'wasting' his travel costs I got him to do a cam belt change while he was here as I wasn't quite sure when it had been done previously as I'd not had the TF that long then.
Jon came and fixed a coolant leak, did a service last year and helped me out with a couple of other bits n pieces when he was here.
I only found the Pontypool guy by chance when I was at a body shop a few units away, I noticed he had rover listed on his hoarding sign so called in for a chat - and it turned out he used to work in the (now ex) MGR dealers in Cwmbran. I'd never spoken to anyone quite so enthusiastic about MGs outside of the MG world before lol. He's just replaced my leaking water pump & cam + alternator belts last week for a very reasonable price and will be fitting new subframe mounts and lower wish bones soon. He's also helped me out a lot with my son's car while I've been struggling to get that through the MOT so I'd happily recommend him.
I have use one of the mechanics in Barry before, but won't personally return to him although I know others have been very pleased with the work he's done on their MGs.

Your experiences and advice is exactly why I should have joined this forum earlier!
Recommendations are exactly what I need, anyone can take on a job but I want to know its being done properly by someone who knows the car. Pontypool may well be the option I take, just gotta find something to do in Pontypool for a few hours now, ha.

So long as I wasn't in work, I'd be happy to meet up with you for a coffee and a bacon sarnie in a truck stop cafe not too far away and then maybe you could experience the delights that Cwmbran has to offer.... (it's actually not all that bad for wasting a couple of hours in the shopping centre/coffee shops), Pontypool isn't the most exciting of places to hang around

fair play to you Jan!! Will see how funds are now next month as my "car funds account" ran out a little quicker than expected!....frustrating when the money goes towards repairs rather than mods!! Looking to get a Scorpion with dual exit, z an f remap and a wheel refurb on a couple of corners, and by "looking to get" I mean if B&Q started selling money trees!!

I know exactly what you mean, and if you do find money trees in B&Q, can you let me know as I'll go and pick a couple up! Mines had an oil leak for as long as I've had it (almost 6 years) - I did have a cam seal (I think) replaced a few years ago, but it still leaks. It's not a huge amount, maybe like 1 drop a day is about all. I just keep an eye on it and top up the oil now and then. I'm not saying you should leave yours for 6 years to get it fixed mind! ;D I think you and Russ live fairly near each other(?), maybe if you worked it round to when he was free, he could take the trip up with you and make a day out of it - we could have a mini meet at the garage lol.

Sorry Jan if I find any I'm gonna pre order the lot Ah someone I can compare the size of my leak with (double check I wrote "leak"....phew) Football takes over my Saturdays while in season so will prob have to do a weekday run to Pontypool, unless I wait until the seasons over, which after hearing of your 6 year leak puts me at ease about waiting
